HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 334 Offered January 24, 2000 Commending John L. "Jack" Lewis III. ---------- Patrons-- Ware and Ingram; Senators: Chichester and Watkins ----------

WHEREAS, John L. "Jack" Lewis III retired on December 31, 1999, after 23 years as Powhatan County Attorney for the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lewis has been a resident of Powhatan County since 1962, became Commonwealth Attorney in 1976, and has since served for six additional terms; and

WHEREAS, a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, Jack Lewis received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Virginia in 1959 and completed a law degree at the University in 1962; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as Powhatan's Attorney for the Commonwealth, Jack Lewis has seen the county sheriff's department increase nearly six-fold and the court dockets become increasingly heavy as the population of Powhatan grew steadily; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lewis loves Powhatan County and has spent his career working to improve it by serving as the chairman of a committee to develop a YMCA, as a member of the vestry at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and as a board member at Southside Electric Cooperative; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lewis has served Powhatan County with dignity, compassion, honesty, and aggressiveness; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend John L. "Jack" Lewis III for his career of public service to the people of Powhatan County and congratulate him for his well-earned retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John L. "Jack" Lewis III as an expression of appreciation for a job well done and best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
