HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 319
On the death of W. Edgar Trent.

WHEREAS, W. Edgar Trent of Chase City, a member of the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors and former chairman of the deacons of First Baptist Church of Chase City, died on November 9, 1999; and

WHEREAS, a native of Charlotte County, Edgar Trent served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, earned his degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, played professional baseball, and briefly taught school in Goochland County; and

WHEREAS, Edgar Trent accepted a position with the Farmers Home Administration (FHA) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and for nearly three decades supervised FHA programs in Virginia’s Southside communities; and

WHEREAS, in 1992 Edgar Trent was elected to the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors, on which he served with great effectiveness and integrity until his death, which occurred shortly after his reelection to a third term; and

WHEREAS, Edgar Trent was a member of the Governor’s Regional Open-Space Preservation Advisory Committee and was serving his second term on the Southside Virginia Business and Education Commission; and

WHEREAS, an active, committed, and highly respected local leader, W. Edgar Trent will be deeply missed by his family, by his numerous friends and colleagues, and by the citizens of Mecklenburg County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the loss of a distinguished citizen of Mecklenburg County, W. Edgar Trent; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of W. Edgar Trent as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
