WHEREAS, the explosion of computer-based technologies and Internet-related business has made economic development and job creation based on those technologies and businesses a realistic possibility for communities large and small throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, although "e-technology" and "e-commerce" are much less dependent than previous technologies and traditional ways of doing business on existing transportation infrastructures, "high tech" companies, nevertheless, place very great importance, in evaluating and selecting communities in which to locate, on easy access to a modern full-service airport capable of meeting their sometimes very specialized needs for both passenger and freight transportation; and

WHEREAS, it is highly desirable, in the interest of the economic development of the entire Commonwealth generally, and of Southside and Southwest Virginia in particular, that Virginia's regional airports be made aware of these specialized air transportation needs so that they may respond by improving their capabilities and facilities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Center for Innovative Technology be requested to study needed improvements to Virginia's regional airports. Such study shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, an assessment of the air transportation needs and expectations of advanced technology businesses. The Center shall seek input from and the cooperation of Virginia's Technology Councils.

All agencies of the Commonwealth shall provide assistance to the Center for this study, upon request.

The Center shall complete its work in time to submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 2001 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents.
