HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 3 Offered January 12, 2000 Prefiled November 14, 1999 Commending the Wilson Memorial High School girls’ volleyball team. ---------- Patrons-- Landes; Senator: Hanger ----------

WHEREAS, Wilson Memorial High School, in the Augusta County community of Fishersville, has long been noted for the excellence of its girls’ athletic programs, especially basketball; and

WHEREAS, this sterling reputation now shines even brighter at Wilson Memorial, due to the exceptional efforts of Wilson Memorial’s 1999 girls’ volleyball team; and

WHEREAS, this senior-led squad completed a dream season by capturing the 1999 Virginia High School League Group A girls’ volleyball state championship, the first volleyball state title in school history; and

WHEREAS, Coach Fonda Zombro’s Hornets dominated the Skyline District, advanced to the state championships, and defeated previously unbeaten John Battle High School, 15 - 5, 15 - 4, to win the state championship; and

WHEREAS, in completing their season with an outstanding record of 27 - 1, the Wilson Memorial Hornets relied on the leadership of their seven seniors, on their hard work and off-season preparation, and on their team spirit and intensity; and

WHEREAS, the Wilson Memorial volleyball players, many of whom also played on successful Hornets basketball teams, have authored a new chapter in the legendary athletic history of Wilson Memorial High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the girls’ volleyball team from Wilson Memorial High School on its historic 1999 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Fonda Zombro as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the Wilson Memorial High School Hornets.
