2000 SESSION
004125604WHEREAS, for the second time in three years, the West Springfield High School girls’ basketball team completed a perfect season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state basketball championship; and
WHEREAS, like their counterparts in 1997, the 1999 West Springfield Spartans finished the season with an unblemished record of 30 - 0 and erased the disappointment of an upset loss in the 1998 regional tournament; and
WHEREAS, led by seniors Kara Lawson, Colleen McIlwrath, Tracy Mayrant, and Joanna Jeruzal, the Spartans easily defeated the Rams from Robinson High School, 60 - 38, to capture the 1999 title; and
WHEREAS, in defeating the highly rated Rams for the fourth time during the 1998-1999 season, the West Springfield Spartans relied on the scoring of Kara Lawson, the James Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and exceptional team defense, which limited the Rams to 26 percent shooting in the final game; and
WHEREAS, the Spartans of West Springfield were recently honored by the West Springfield Rotary Club for their academic excellence, evident in the seniors’ 3.5 grade point average, and their community work, such as coaching mentally and physically challenged students and providing toys and other essentials to less fortunate youth during the holiday season; and
WHEREAS, the triumph of the West Springfield High School girls’ basketball team is a tribute to the skills and teamwork of the players, the expert coaching of Head Coach Bill Gibson and his staff, and the support of the students, faculty, staff, and parents of West Springfield High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the West Springfield High School girls’ basketball team on its championship season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Bill Gibson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the exceptional performance of the West Springfield High School Spartans.
