HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 137
Commending the Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund.

WHEREAS, the Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund was created 65 years ago by Tom Hanes, an editor of the afternoon newspaper, The Ledger-Star; and

WHEREAS, the Joy Fund has evolved into a holiday charity that benefits nearly 30,000 children each year; and

WHEREAS, the Joy Fund assists underprivileged children in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Isle of Wight County, and Virginia’s Eastern Shore; and

WHEREAS, in its 65-year history, the Joy Fund has helped more than one million children; and

WHEREAS, during the 1999 holiday season, the Joy Fund raised more than $280,000, which was used to assist 25,482 underprivileged children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund for its 65 years of generosity to the children of the Hampton Roads area; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the fund’s successful and sustained efforts to improve the lives of the children of the Commonwealth.
