Commending the Virginian Pilot Joy Fund.

WHEREAS, the Virginian Pilot Joy Fund was created 65 years ago by Tom Hanes, an editor of the afternoon paper, The Ledger; and

WHEREAS, the Joy Fund has evolved into a holiday charity that benefits nearly 30,000 children each year; and

WHEREAS, the Joy Fund assists underprivileged children in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Isle of Wight County, and Virginia’s Eastern Shore; and

WHEREAS, in its 65-year history, the Joy Fund has helped more than one million children; and

WHEREAS, during the 1999 holiday season, the Joy Fund raised more than $280,000, which was used to assist 25,482 underprivileged children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginian Pilot Joy Fund for its 65 years of generosity to the children of the Hampton Roads area; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginian Pilot Joy Fund as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the fund’s successful and sustained efforts to improve the lives of the children of the Commonwealth.
