Commending the Frank W. Cox High School field hockey team.

WHEREAS, the Frank W. Cox High School field hockey team continued its unprecedented success during the 1999 season; and

WHEREAS, faced with the seemingly impossible task of improving on the performance of their predecessors, the girls from Cox High School finished with a perfect record of 21-0 and captured the school’s 13th state championship, breaking their own national record; and

WHEREAS, dominant as Cox High School teams usually are, the girls from Virginia Beach scored 113 goals during the season, fourth-highest in team history, while yielding only four; and

WHEREAS, Cox High School won the Beach District regular season championship and swept the Beach District, Eastern Region, and Virginia High School League state tournaments to end the season with a 37-game winning streak; and

WHEREAS, the Frank W. Cox High School field hockey team’s state title was its third in a row and 10th in the past 11 years; and

WHEREAS, Coach Nancy Fowlkes, the winningest coach in state history, now has a record of 372-50-19, the best in Virginia field hockey history and the best among the nation’s active coaches; and

WHEREAS, the extraordinary success of the Cox field hockey team shows no signs of abating, due to the tradition of excellence created by the coaches, the players, and the students of Frank W. Cox High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the 1999 field hockey team from Frank W. Cox High School on its truly amazing performance; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Nancy Fowlkes as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations to the champions from Frank W. Cox High School.
