Whereas, Kenneth Peters (Mr. Peters) lives in Ridgeway, Virginia and works as in the Henry County Sheriff’s Office; and

Whereas, Mr. Peters was an officer with the Martinsville Police Department (the Department) for twelve years and four months prior to resigning in May 1998 to take a position on the civil police force in the country of Bosnia; and

Whereas, Prior to taking the position, Mr. Peters was told by the Department’s police chief that he would be able to take a leave of absence for a one year period and allowed to return to his position with the Department; and

Whereas, shortly before leaving for Bosnia, Mr. Peters was informed by the police chief that in fact he could not take the leave of absence; and

Whereas, Mr. Peters decided to resign from his position with the Department and went to Bosnia to serve on the civil police force; and

Whereas, at the time of his resignation Mr. Peters had accumulated sick time amounting to between 100 and 110 full working days; and

Whereas, Mr. Peters received no compensation for the accumulated sick time; and

Whereas, the value of the accumulated sick time is $10,143.80; and

Whereas, Kenneth Peters has no other means to obtain relief except by action of this body; now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. § 1. That there is hereby appropriated from the general fund of the state treasury the sum of $10,143.80 for the relief of Kenneth Peters, to be paid by check issued by the State Treasurer on warrant of the Comptroller upon execution of a release of all claims he may have against the Commonwealth or any agency, instrumentality, office, employee or political subdivision in connection with the aforesaid occurrence.
